This trip starts in Kuala Lumpur, crosses to Malaysian Borneo, then jumps south to Bali before finishing in Darwin and Australia's Top End. On paper it looks like a string of flights, but the places feel completely different from one another: Kuala Lumpur is all city energy and late-night food, Sabah is greener and wilder, Bali slows everything down, and Darwin feels like the edge of a huge landscape.

I would not try to cram every possible sight into this route. In Kuala Lumpur I would make time for the Petronas Towers, Chinatown and an evening around Jalan Alor. In Sabah, the highlight is getting out of Kota Kinabalu, either towards the islands or inland towards Kinabalu Park. Bali deserves at least one day around Ubud and the rice terraces, plus a proper coastal evening at Jimbaran. In Darwin, the city is interesting, but the real reason to stay longer is to reach places such as Litchfield or, with more time, Kakadu.

The food is one of the best parts of the journey. Malaysia gives us nasi lemak, grilled fish, rendang and cendol; Bali brings satay, slow-cooked spiced dishes and excellent everyday warung food; and Darwin finishes the trip with a very different mix of Australian produce and tropical influences. The day-by-day route below follows the trip as I would actually travel it, with a few places I would genuinely recommend making time for rather than treating each stop as a checklist.
