We arrived in Salzburg in June 2026 with six days, a hire car and a fairly ambitious route ahead of us. The temperature was already heading towards 33°C, which would become a theme of the trip.

The plan was to start in Salzburg, cross briefly into Bavaria, travel through the Austrian lake district, spend a day at the Austrian Grand Prix in Spielberg and then continue south into Slovenia. From Lake Bled we would reach Ljubljana before using the final day to get back into the mountains around the Julian Alps.

Food was never the only reason for the trip, but it quickly became one of the best ways to understand where we were. Austria meant schnitzel, dumplings, Alpine cheese and pastry. Crossing into Bavaria brought sausages and heavier German cooking. Slovenia added another change, with dishes such as Kranjska klobasa, Idrijski žlikrofi, štruklji, freshwater fish and the famous cream cake associated with Lake Bled.

This is the route day by day, including the places we visited and some of the traditional dishes that fit naturally with each stop. The meals are not intended as a strict record of everything eaten on the trip. They are a way of connecting each part of the journey with food from the country and region we were travelling through.
